Producing Company Capabilities

The constantly evolving nature and scope of the marketing industry provides each member of the Mustang staff with new responsibilities all the time. To grow with the trends, we participate in webinars, conferences and discussions—but occasionally we get to utilize skills that we typically don’t use for work, or were hired for.

This is the story about how making the most of my background became a part of my job.

We set up a taping for one of our clients in order to create a series of videos from the footage. The session was a huge success, and our client wanted to maximize the usage of the footage we captured. We suggested creating radio commercials from the audio, an idea the client heartily approved.

It was assumed that Randall, the resident video and animation specialist at that time, would also create the radio spots. However, we realized that making more than 20 motion-graphic videos and completing his other projects would be quite a time-consuming process (who knew?), and his honeymoon was right around the corner.

Before the Mustang team made other arrangements to complete the project, I realized a unique opportunity presented itself to me. I had a degree in broadcasting, and had served as the production director at a radio station in college, and I’d loved it. This was a serendipitous way to marry my love of audio production and marketing—so I blurted to my team “Actually, I have a degree in that.”

And I took over the radio spot creation.

For several days, I stayed in radio-vana. I really savored utilizing skills from both of my areas of study for Mustang, and the client liked my work! Since then, I have completed numerous in-house radio spot writing and production projects for several of Mustang’s clients.

It doesn’t always work out so perfectly, but occasionally special skills crop up among staff members that enable the expansion of company capabilities. Even though I wasn’t hired to edit audio for Mustang, I was able to help increase job production. Pun intended.
